Denver Kids, Inc. offers a variety of opportunities for our students to participate in community building, service projects, and educational activities throughout the year. These activities range from trips to the zoo or the farm, to workshops focused on financial literacy and gang awareness, and ice skating and community service work. As a short term volunteer you would not only be supporting the activity programs, but the future options program, the parent to parent program, and possible administrative programs as well.
Volunteer needs include: • Transportation Assistants – One of the biggest barriers for students to participate in these activities is simply getting to/from them. We are seeking caring individuals with reliable transportation and a safe driving record to help transport students to/from activities.
• Activities Helper – We are always looking for individuals to help plan / set-up / run / clean-up the activities that are offered. Times and locations vary depending on the activity.
• Future Options- College Prep Activities Assistants – We are looking for men and women who would volunteer at planned events throughout the year to assist students in a variety of future planning activities. Including, College Prep bootcamp, FAFSA form education and assistance, College Application assistance, Essay/Resume/Personal Statement editing, feedback and assistance. Times and locations vary throughout the year.
•Parent 2 Parent Program- The purpose is to empower and educate the parents of our students on the importance of and how to be engaged in the education of their son/daughter.
We need: •Transportation Assistants – One of the biggest barriers for families to participate in these meetings is simply getting to/from them. We are seeking caring individuals with reliable transportation and a safe driving record that would help to transport one or more parents and possibly their children if they don’t have access to childcare to/from these local area meetings.
• Childcare activities Planner/Leader – Many of our parents who attend these meetings don’t have access to childcare so for them to attend, their children must also attend. The ages vary from toddlers to high school students. We are seeking caring individuals who would help to take care of and plan activities for the children to do while their parents participate in the meeting. Could be sports, crafts, games, etc.
•Tutoring/Homework Helper – For our school age students who have to attend the meetings with their parents we would love to offer them opportunities to get help with homework and assistance with subjects in which they may struggle.
In order to provide the safest environment for our volunteers, our students and their families, we have an in-depth application and screening process for short-term volunteers. This includes an application, interview, references, fingerprinting, driving history report and training.
To begin the volunteer process, please complete the appropriate application and return it to Denver Kids, Inc. The application can be accessed by visiting our website, http://denverkidsinc.org, and clicking on the Mentor/Volunteer tab, then choosing the Short-Term Volunteer Opportunities option or email Rachel at rachel_sprague@dpsk12.org requesting application.
